Alan was one of Chicago’s original house music DJs and is regarded by many as among the “founding fathers” of house. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Alan was a member of the legendary DJ crew “The Chosen Few,” which consisted of Alan, Wayne Williams, Jesse Saunders, and Tony and Andre Hatchett. Along with Frankie Knuckles, then at the Warehouse, the Chosen Few were among the Chicago DJs primarily responsible during this period for popularizing the underground dance music that came to be known as “house music.” In 1980-81, Alan and the Chosen Few were resident DJs at the Loft in Chicago (1416 S. Michigan Avenue), a club of historic importance in the birth and development of house music. The Chosen Few holds their annual Old Skool Reunion Picnic, one of the world’ s premier house music events, each July in Chicago. A house music documentary film featuring the Chosen Few DJs is currently in production.
Present
After a 15-year “retirement” from the scene, Alan returned with a vengeance in the year 2000. Since then, Alan has played to rave reviews at various Chicago nightspots, including Le Passage, Spy Bar, Sidecar Café, Square One, and with Frankie Knuckles at House of Blues on Thanksgiving 2003. Alan’s mixes are also regularly featured on WCRX- 88.1 FM’s Friday night “Masters in the Mix” show, and on the web at DeepHousePage.com, GottaHaveHouse.com and Kingstreetsounds. com. On-line interviews with Alan can be found at boimagazine.com/22. 3/AlanKing.html and DeepHousePage.com/alan.htm. Alan is also featured in the much anticipated house music documentary film, “The Unusual Suspects,” currently in production by house music legend Chip E and set for release in 2004. Although Alan’s roots are in disco and deep house, he now leads the “Nu Bang Clan,” a collection of Chicago DJs who are dedicated to advancing the cause of new underground dance music.
